God Save the King is actually a split release and/or a Robert Fripp compilation, depending on how you look at it. In 1980, Robert Fripp released something of a split disc himself, called God Save the Queen/Under Heavy Manners, consisting of a side of Frippertronics and a side of Discotronics, the latter being Frippertronics with a 'dance-oriented' (according to Fripp) rhythm section. Also in 1980, Fripp formed a new group, borrowing the name from his early-'60s band, the League of Gentlemen.
This 'new' League of Gentlemen toured for much of 1980, releasing The League of Gentlemen in 1981. In 1985, Fripp took a couple of the Discotronics tunes and a bunch of The League of Gentlemen tracks, and created a compilation of Frippian 'dance music,' which was then entitled God Save the King. It's a fine offering, but fans would still like to see both albums issued in their entirety.

  2. League of Gentlemen finds Bob Fripp heading a lean mean dance band, with some flashy geetar music. It is a great side-trip on a career that has placed him in the role of pretentious guitar god (not without some merit). I like the stripped down no-nonsense Mr. Fripp here - it shows what he can really do.
